The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has cautioned the public about the activities of the Association of Pension Desk Practitioners of Nigeria (ASSOPEP). In a statement signed by Head of Corporate Communications Abdulqadir Dahiru and released to journalists in Lagos on Friday, PenCom disassociated itself from ASSOPEP’s involvement in pension matters and urged people to avoid any interaction with the association regarding their pension and retirement benefits.
PenCom noted that it had become aware of “illicit activities” by ASSOPEP, which falsely claims to resolve pension issues and assist retirees in securing benefits. The commission emphasized that these claims are entirely untrue and that ASSOPEP has no affiliation with the pension industry nor any authorization from PenCom.
The statement further clarified that Licensed Pension Fund Operators (LPFOs), which are statutorily mandated to process and pay retirement benefits, are not associated with ASSOPEP in any way. Workers, retirees, pension desk officers, and anyone approached by the association with offers to consult with their Pension Fund Administrators (PFAs) or PenCom about retirement benefits are advised to exercise caution.
PenCom has reported ASSOPEP to law‑enforcement agencies for appropriate action and warned that any dealings with the association are undertaken at the individual’s own risk.
