Tuchel first bested Guardiola as Chelsea manager in City’s only run to the Champions League final in 2021, a match that remains the closest Guardiola has come in ten attempts across Barcelona, Bayern and City to claim his third European Cup. Chelsea’s 1‑0 win in a largely empty Estádio do Dragão in Porto—restricted by coronavirus measures—was a classic case of the apprentice outshining the master.
As a young coach, Tuchel admired Guardiola’s dominant Barcelona side, which captured 14 trophies between 2008 and 2012, including two Champions League titles. Their paths crossed again during Guardiola’s three‑year spell at Bayern, while Tuchel was at Mainz and later Borussia Dortmund. The two football obsessives even spent a night in a Munich bar in 2014, using glasses and salt‑and‑pepper shakers to diagram formations. “I was such a huge admirer of Pep when he was a player and then when he became a coach it was like learning on the job for me,” Tuchel said before the 2021 final. “I was an academy coach and then in the Bundesliga with Mainz, but I don’t think I missed a game of Guardiola’s Barcelona because there was so much to learn.”
The respect is mutual. Guardiola described Tuchel last season as “one of the few managers I learn from to develop into a better manager myself.” Historically, Guardiola has held the upper hand in their meetings: Tuchel’s three Chelsea wins in six weeks at the end of the 2020/21 season are his only victories in ten encounters, while Guardiola has six wins. Nevertheless, Tuchel’s most important triumph came that season, and his Champions League pedigree helped Bayern secure his services, leading to the shock sacking of Julian Nagelsmann last month. Tuchel also guided Paris Saint‑Germain to their first European Cup final in 2020 and pushed eventual winners Real Madrid to extra‑time in last year’s quarter‑finals, despite Chelsea’s crisis under sanctions on former owner Roman Abramovich.
Now, the 49‑year‑old faces the challenge of achieving what Guardiola could not—returning Bayern to Champions League glory. The pressure, however, weighs even more heavily on the City boss. In his seventh season in Manchester, Guardiola is vying for a fifth Premier League title, yet his inability to win Europe remains a blemish on his record. “It doesn’t mean I agree with that but absolutely we will be judged by this competition,” Guardiola said, emphasizing the importance of a Champions League triumph for his legacy at the Etihad.
The presence of Erling Haaland adds further pressure. The Norwegian returned from injury to score twice in a 4‑1 win at Southampton, taking his season tally to 44 and prompting Guardiola to compare him with Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Haaland’s fine margins in the latter stages of the Champions League forced City to outbid rivals across Europe to secure his services. The 22‑year‑old has already netted 33 goals in 25 Champions League appearances, including five in a 7‑0 demolition of RB Leipzig in the last‑16.
