The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State reported that 37 drug peddlers and users were convicted between January and March. State Commander Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.) disclosed the figures to the News Agency of Nigeria in Kano on Monday, noting that the command had arrested 352 suspects during the same period. In addition to the 37 convictions by the Federal High Court, the agency filed 39 new cases, while 127 cases remain pending.
During the first quarter of the year, the agency seized substantial quantities of illicit substances: 955.304 kg of cannabis sativa, 1,225.05 kg of codeine and tramadol, 25 g of cocaine, 17 g of heroin, and 52 g of methamphetamine. The NDLEA also highlighted its drug‑demand reduction efforts, stating that 5,060 individuals—including secondary and tertiary students, traders, vigilante groups, and political thugs—were sensitised about the dangers of drug abuse. Educational programmes on the “War Against Drug Abuse” were conducted for youths, women, and other community members.
Commander Idris‑Ahmad urged residents to provide information on drug‑dealer activities in their neighborhoods and called on the public, parents, and community leaders to act as watchdogs for their wards. He affirmed that the agency will persist in its fight against drug abuse and trafficking, pledging to “move around every nook and cranny of the state to ensure a drug‑free society.”
