Deputy Governor of Gombe State, Dr. Manassah Jatau, has been nominated as chairman of a 16‑member state National Population and Housing Census (NPC) advocacy and logistics committee. The terms of reference, read by the Secretary of State Government, Professor Ibrahim Njodi, at a banquet hall for the deputy governor, outline the committee’s mandate to conduct a comprehensive public enlightenment and sensitisation campaign for the 2023 National Population and Housing Census.

Professor Njodi explained that the committee is expected to devise and implement effective strategies that will help the NPC produce accurate and reliable census data. Its responsibilities include recommending reasonable and affordable logistics and security assistance for the NPC, supervising and guiding local publicity and logistics committees, and undertaking any other activities that support the NPC’s overarching vision of delivering precise, reliable, and acceptable data for the state.

In response, Dr. Jatau praised the committee members for their nominations and emphasized the importance of the census for development. He noted that, although the census is now digital, human involvement can still lead to shortcomings. “The digital census may not eliminate the political, religious and cultural biases that have historically affected census accuracy in the country,” he said. “It is people who control—and sometimes manipulate—these machines, which were intended to make tasks easier and more precise.”

The committee’s members are: Zubair Muhammad Umar, Attorney‑General/Commissioner for Justice (deputy chairman); Abubakar Muh’d Luggerewo, Speaker of the Gombe House of Assembly; Meshack Audu Lauco, Muhammad Gambo Magaji, Commissioner, Ministry of Finance; Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo, Commissioner, Ministry for Local Governments; Professor Namala Amuga; Adamu Dishi Kupto, Commissioner for Internal Security; Yusuf Dauda Kaltungo, Director General of Civil Service Reforms; Dr. Maijama’a Usman; Alh. Salisu Baba Alkali, Chairman BOIR; Alh. Sa’adu Hassan, Executive Secretary MPWB; Alh. Ali Usman, ALGON Chairman Gombe State; the State Director of NPC; Muhammad Usman Shanu, Secretary; and Bala Sarki, co‑Secretary.
