The Police Service Commission (PSC) has formed a committee to investigate a report published by an online medium alleging that police officers pay up to $10,000 in bribes to obtain promotions. The PSC’s Head of Press and Public Relations, Mr. Ikechukwu Ani, made the statement on Thursday in Abuja.
According to the report, some officers allegedly gave a $10,000 bribe to secure special promotion from the PSC. The claim was said to have been made by a person named Chijioke Okonkwo in a petition on behalf of aggrieved senior police officers. While Okonkwo’s rank was not disclosed, the PSC said it would welcome further details about the allegations. Ani noted that the commission has not formally received the petition or any similar complaint, and urged anyone with evidence to forward it to the commission urgently. He assured that anyone found culpable will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
The PSC has established an investigative panel comprising members of the commission and the Nigeria Police Force to examine the allegations. Aggrieved officers are encouraged to approach the panel with substantiated proof that could aid the investigation. The commission warned that those found wanting will face the full force of the law and that it will not tolerate frivolous or fictitious media claims. Officers are reminded to follow approved lines of communication.
Ani also said the commission has directed the police to identify Chijioke Okonkwo for appropriate interrogation. He affirmed that the new PSC Chairman, Solomon Arase, is working to harmonise and improve the services of both the commission and the police. “The commission cannot afford this kind of distraction,” he said, adding that Arase’s efforts to bring sanity, peace and unity to the police sub‑sector are already yielding results. Ani assured Nigerians that Chairman Arase is determined to sanitise the system, has warned commission staff to act above board, and that bribery and corruption of any kind will not be tolerated under his watch.
