Supreme Court Sets Date for PDP’s Suit Against Tinubu and Shettima

The Supreme Court has announced the 26th of May as the date for delivering judgment in a case brought by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). The case is aimed at disqualifying the President-elect, Bola Tinubu, and the Vice-President-elect, Kassim Shettima.

The PDP is seeking to challenge the Court of Appeal’s judgment, which held that the party had failed to establish its locus standi. The apex court will determine whether the PDP has the legal ground to challenge the election of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The PDP had earlier filed the suit based on the criteria listed in Section 131(d) of the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. The section states that a person shall be qualified for election to the office of the President if he has been educated up to at least School Certificate level or its equivalent.

The Court of Appeal had upheld the judgment of the Federal High Court, Abuja, which dismissed the suit on the grounds that the PDP had not shown that Tinubu and Shettima did not meet the educational requirement.

The Supreme Court’s decision will be eagerly awaited as it will have far-reaching implications on Nigeria’s legal and political landscape. It remains to be seen whether the PDP’s challenge will be successful or if Tinubu and Shettima will be allowed to assume their respective positions come May 29th.

All eyes will be on the Supreme Court on the 26th of May as the nation awaits the final verdict on this closely watched case.
