The recent signing into law of the new Customs Act is expected to increase efficiency and effectiveness in Nigerian customs administration, says President Muhammadu Buhari. The new Customs Act will provide more agility and robustness for customs administration, enhance regulatory frameworks, and promote trade facilitation while strengthening the country’s security networks.
The President, speaking at the opening ceremony of the new Customs headquarters in Abuja, highlighted the challenges faced by the Customs Service, particularly the vulnerability of the country’s borders, which provide opportunities for illicit activities such as smuggling, increased transnational crimes, and other security threats.
The Customs Act, which was signed into law in April 2023, was subject to extensive consultations and deliberations, according to the President. The Act is aimed at modernizing customs operations and fostering a business-friendly environment, attracting investments, and promoting economic growth.
