Rivers United Forward Nyima Nwagua: “Football Unites, Not Divides”

Football has always been a sport that brings people together, and Nyima Nwagua, the Rivers United forward, can attest to that.

Speaking after a kind gesture towards his team from the Edo State deputy governor, Philip Shaibu, Nwagua emphasized the importance of football as a unifying factor.

The striker and his team recently ended Bendel Insurance’s 21-game unbeaten run on Friday at the NPL Super Six playoff. Despite the intense competition, Nyima firmly believes that football should not end friendships no matter the outcome.

In an interview with Media Talk Africa in Lagos, Nyima stated, “Football is, indeed, a unifying tool. It should unite us and not cause friction when you lose.”

His words come at a time when the world is grappling with challenges like racism, violence, and other social ills that divide communities. At such times, sport can often provide a sense of togetherness that overcomes such divisions and promotes unity.

Football, in particular, is deeply ingrained in Nigeria’s culture, with the sport bringing people together from different backgrounds and locations.

As Nigeria strives towards progress and development, it’s important to embrace the spirit of unity that football embodies. Through sports, people can connect and form meaningful relationships, paving the way for a more cohesive and stronger society.
