Tragedy Strikes as Horse Rider Kills Cyclist in Jigawa

A 25-year-old horse rider, Mohd Mustapha, has caused a heart-wrenching tragedy in the Ringim Local Government Area of Jigawa State, leaving a 70-year-old cyclist, Umar Hassan, dead as a result of the accident.

According to an eyewitness, the horse rider was unable to control the rider’s horse, causing the animal to crash into the cyclist, leading to his demise.

Reports have shown that this incident is not an isolated one, and it comes less than a month after another incident where a man was knocked down by a horse rider during a wedding horse race.

Speaking on the incident, the Police Spokesman, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the accident, stating that it occurred when the horse rider, who lacked authorization to ride within the Ringim municipality, caused a ruckus, leading to danger to society in general. Further explaining that the rider lost control of the horse and hit Umar Hassan, leading to various degrees of injuries and leg fractures.

On the arrival of the police at the scene, the victim was rushed to Ringim General Hospital, where he was confirmed dead while receiving treatment from a medical doctor.

The suspect has been apprehended by the police and detained in their custody. An investigation will be conducted, and he will be charged to court, according to the Police Spokesman.

It is sad to note that cases of casualties related to horse riding have increased in the state, bringing to mind the need for stakeholders to enforce safety protocols and regulations to prevent further losses.
