Escaped Inmate From Kuje Prison Arrested for Alleged Burglary in Nasarawa

The Nasarawa State Police Command has apprehended an escaped inmate from the Kuje Custodial Centre in FCT Abuja. The suspect, Haruna Sunday, allegedly burgled a home in Masaka, Karu Local Government Area of the state, where he made away with mobile phones and a plasma television on June 8.

The Police detectives attached to the Masaka Police Division arrested the suspect following a tip-off and diligent investigations. DSP Ramhan Nansel, the state Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest of Sunday and other criminal suspects on Wednesday at the command’s headquarters in Lafia.

During interrogations, Sunday admitted to escaping from the Kuje prison after it was attacked in 2022 and awaiting trial before his escape. He revealed that he went into hiding at a friend’s place in Kaduna before he was lured into the criminal act.

According to Nansel, the suspect would be handed over to the Nigeria Correctional Service for further action. The Police spokesperson also disclosed the arrest of 17 other suspects for offences ranging from armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms to kidnapping between May 25 and June 8. Four firearms and three rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspects.

The command reassured the public of its commitment to fighting crime in the state and implored the people to support the police with relevant information to track down criminal elements in the state.
