In compliance with the Nigerian Constitution, the Niger State Governor, Muhammad Umar Bago, has been granted permission by the Niger State House of Assembly to appoint 20 special advisers.
The Speaker of the House, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, read Governor Bago’s letter requesting for the appointment of the Special Advisers on the floor of the House, and the approval followed shortly after.
The lawmakers, who were inaugurated just earlier this week by Governor Bago, emphasized the need to ensure gender and geographic balance for fairness, equity and justice.
This led to the demand by the member representing Bosso Constituency, Abubakar Gomna, for the list of names of the Special Advisers to be read on the floor of the House. However, this demand was denied by the Speaker, who explained that the power to appoint special advisers lies with the governor, and he has no obligation to present the names for reading before the House.
After deliberation, a motion was moved by Murtala Badaru, the member representing Suleja Constituency, for the House to approve the governor’s request. The motion was seconded by the member representing Bida 1, Mohammed Wanchiko, and approval was granted by the House.
The Speaker then directed the Clerk of the House, Abdullahi Kagara, to convey the decision of the Assembly to the governor. The session was adjourned till the next legislative day.
