The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has announced its readiness to conduct Malaria Vaccine Clinical Trials across Nigeria. Professor Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, revealed this information during an interactive session with pharmaceutical stakeholders in Lagos. The decision to pursue clinical trials for a malaria vaccine reflects the nation’s commitment to eradicating the malaria epidemic in Nigeria.
NAFDAC also emphasized the importance of establishing a Pharmacovigilance Surveillance Department within the Nigerian pharmaceutical industry. This move will ensure proper monitoring of pharmaceutical products throughout the supply chain. Prof. Adeyeye stressed the need for pharmaceutical manufacturers to implement effective pharmacovigilance processes and train their stakeholders on the importance of reporting adverse drug reactions (ADRs) and adverse events following immunization (AEFIs) to the Agency.
The President of the Community Pharmacists Association of Nigeria, Pharm. Wale Oladigbolu, lauded NAFDAC for taking this initiative. He stated, “Although Pharmacovigilance is not a novel concept, with this new approach, we can confidently address public health concerns using scientific methods to protect their well-being.”
The commencement of Malaria Vaccine Clinical Trials and the implementation of proper pharmacovigilance processes mark significant steps in the battle against malaria in Nigeria. By leveraging scientific research and monitoring drug safety, NAFDAC aims to minimize the impact of malaria and improve the overall health and well-being of Nigerians.
