The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) passenger service plying the Nairobi-Mombasa route is witnessing a surge in bookings ahead of the Christmas festivities. With the holiday season approaching, Kenyans are flocking to secure their seats for the annual exodus to their hometowns and for leisure trips.
A recent survey conducted by Capital Business on the Kenya Railway (KR) Madaraka online booking platform depicts a fully booked schedule for the coaches from December 22nd to 24th. The high demand for SGR travel during holidays is largely attributed to its affordability and swiftness compared to air travel and conventional bus services.
Our attempt to book a train seat through the KR online platform to travel from Nairobi Terminus to Mombasa Terminus on December 24th was met with a prompt response indicating full capacity, signifying the overwhelming interest in SGR services during this period.
Commuters keen on making the Nairobi-Mombasa trip part with Sh1,000 for a one-way ticket. However, it is noteworthy that come January 1, 2024, the fare is poised to undergo an increment ranging between Sh500 and Sh1,500.
