South Africa humiliates Wales in record 73-0 win in Cardiff

South Africa’s rugby team, the Springboks, delivered a decisive 73‑0 victory over Wales on Saturday, marking Wales’s heaviest home defeat. The win was the Springboks’ 13th in 15 games this season and their highest score under coach Rassie Erasmus. Played in Cardiff, the match saw Wales struggle to retain possession while South Africa scored 11 tries.

The triumph comes as the Springboks aim to finish the season as the top‑ranked team in the world rugby rankings. However, the game was marred by an incident involving Springbok lock Eben Etzebeth, who received a permanent red card for an eye gouge late in the match. Etzebeth will face a disciplinary committee and is expected to receive a minimum 12‑week ban. He is the third South African lock to be shown a straight red card in November.

Coach Erasmus addressed the incident after the match, stating that the red card was justified and that the behaviour did not reflect the team’s values. His comments underscored the Springboks’ commitment to fair play and sportsmanship.

The victory comes ahead of the draw for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, scheduled for Wednesday. As four‑time World Cup winners, South Africa’s strong performance this season highlights their continued dominance in the sport. The upcoming tournament draw will be closely watched as teams prepare for the next global competition. South Africa’s impressive form, combined with its reputation as a formidable international side, positions the Springboks as strong contenders for future titles. Their ability to adapt and perform under various conditions will be crucial in the pursuit of another World Cup triumph, and fans and pundits alike will be eagerly anticipating the next chapter in international rugby.
