The Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, has called on the governors of Osun, Ogun, and Ekiti States—Senator Ademola Adeleke, Dapo Abiodun, and Biodun Oyebamiji, respectively—to empower the South-West Security Network, known as Amotekun Corps, in their states. This call comes in response to the increasing cases of kidnapping in the region. Speaking at the annual Oodua Festival held at the Palace Square in Ile-Ife on Tuesday, Adams, who also serves as the National Coordinator of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC), emphasized the need for support from South-West governors to enhance security through Amotekun.
In addressing the recent surge in kidnapping incidents in Osun State, Adams noted that Oyo and Ondo States are providing more financial resources to Amotekun compared to their counterparts in the region. He stated, “They should empower the local organizations and Amotekun. They will complement the efforts of the police and other security agencies. Security is not solely the responsibility of the government; all hands must be on deck to ensure adequate security.” He further urged the government to coordinate local security organizations, Amotekun, and the Nigeria Police to achieve effective results.
Adams highlighted the success of Amotekun in Oyo State, where the government has mobilized up to 3,000 personnel and provided them with equipment, resulting in positive outcomes. He pointed out that while Amotekun is performing well in Oyo and Ondo States, its presence is less pronounced in Ekiti, Osun, and Ogun. He also mentioned that Lagos State is not actively participating in the initiative. “We have to use what we have to achieve what we want,” he added.
Additionally, Adams urged the governors of the South-West to invest in tourism as a means to boost their Internally Generated Revenue, further contributing to the region’s development and security efforts.
