The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Ultimate Health Management Services, Mr. Lekan Ewenla, announced that Nigeria will see increased coverage under the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) in 2023. In an interview, he explained that after several years of unsuccessful attempts to repeal and replace the National Health Insurance Scheme, a breakthrough was finally achieved in 2022. This change reshaped the narrative and concept of health insurance in the country.
Ewenla noted that the NHIA, formerly known as the NHIS, was established under the NHIA Act 2022 by the Federal Government to improve access to quality, affordable healthcare for all Nigerians. He emphasized that the full impact of this legislation will be felt in 2023, as the new law makes health insurance mandatory for all Nigerians and legal residents.
“The new NHIA looks very promising,” Ewenla said, adding that the current leadership of the authority is well‑grounded in the concepts of health insurance and healthcare financing. He highlighted that the leadership has carefully assembled a team of experts and managers, and is working closely with critical stakeholders—including Health Maintenance Organisations, healthcare providers, and other key parties. “In 2023 we will hit the ground running, developing the operational guidelines for the new law to commence,” he concluded.
