Oyo South senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress, former Secretary to the Oyo State Government Sharafadeen Alli, has pledged to be the voice of the masses if elected on February 25. Speaking on Friday in Ibadan at a guest platform organized by the state correspondents’ chapel of the Nigerian Union of Journalists, Alli emphasized that women and especially youths in his constituency would receive special attention.
He outlined his plans for youth empowerment, stating, “I will ensure employment opportunities and entrepreneurship training for the youth within my constituency. We will engage them in skills development beyond quality education, with support from the Federal Government. I will also encourage entertainment and sports activities to attract foreign currency and boost the state economy.”
Addressing local government autonomy, the former SSG criticized the current administration of Governor Seyi Makinde, claiming that local governments are effectively dead in Oyo State. “It is a known fact that local governments are dead in Oyo State. This has been admitted by the governor. He gave them N10 million and said they did nothing with it,” he said. Alli noted that during the tenures of Lam Adesina, Rashidi Ladoja, Adebayo Alao‑Akala, and even Abiola Ajimobi, local governments functioned differently. “Now local government exists only in name; it has no power to act. Primary healthcare centres are not functioning despite budget allocations for primary healthcare,” he added.
