The Department of State Services (DSS) announced on Tuesday that the interrogation of former Minister of Aviation and Director of Special Projects and New Media for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council, Femi Fani‑Kayode, is not yet concluded. The DSS had summoned Fani‑Kayode on Monday after he posted a series of tweets over the weekend alleging that high‑ranking military officers had met with the Peoples Democratic Party presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, to discuss a coup.

During his interrogation, Fani‑Kayode admitted that he was wrong to make the controversial statement without first clarifying the matter with the relevant authorities. He said he could have been more circumspect and handled the situation differently. After a five‑hour session, the DSS confirmed that the investigation remains open.

In a statement, DSS Public Relations Officer Peter Afunanya explained that Chief Fani‑Kayode was invited to the agency’s National Headquarters in Abuja on 13 February 2023 for questioning about his allegations, which relate to national security. Following the interview, the DSS granted him administrative bail and required him to make routine returns to the office starting 15 February 2023, pending further investigation.

The DSS also warned political parties and their media managers to exercise restraint in their public comments before and after the general elections. The agency cautioned that inflammatory statements could inflame the political climate, provoke violent reactions, and undermine peace and order.

The military has since refuted Fani‑Kayode’s claim, stating that no such coup plans exist and reaffirming its commitment to the nation’s democracy.
