Former Super Eagles head coach, Sunday Oliseh, has expressed grave concern over Nigeria’s chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, calling it a “disaster” if they fail to make the cut. The Super Eagles are currently struggling in their qualifying group, having failed to secure a win after four matches.
Nigeria’s current position in Group C sees them sitting second from bottom with just three points, and their path to the World Cup seems uncertain. Oliseh highlighted the significance of Nigeria’s participation in the global tournament, particularly after missing out on the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
“Africa could be represented by as many as 10 countries at the next World Cup, and we’re at the risk of not being one of them,” Oliseh told Supersport TV. “It will be a disaster if Nigeria does not qualify.”
Having attended the 2022 World Cup as part of FIFA’s study group, Oliseh revealed how painful it was to see Nigeria absent from the tournament. He stressed that missing out on the World Cup again would be a blow to Nigerian football and its passionate supporters.
The Super Eagles will face Rwanda in their next qualifying match in March 2025, as they aim to secure a spot in the 2026 World Cup.
