Obasanjo Explains Why He Chose Sule Lamido as Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Minister in 1999

Nigeria’s former President Olusegun Obasanjo has shed light on why he appointed Sule Lamido, the ex-governor of Jigawa State, as the country’s foreign affairs minister in 1999. Speaking at the launch of Lamido’s book, ‘Be True to Yourself,’ in Abuja, Obasanjo revealed that the choice of Lamido for the position became his responsibility after the initial candidate declined. The initial candidate, who was close to Lamido, had been anointed for the role, but their decision to decline led Obasanjo to consider Lamido, given their close relationship.

Obasanjo praised Lamido for his admirable character, highlighting his ability to speak truth to power. He shared an anecdote about asking all his ministers to submit undated letters of resignation to maintain accountability. However, when he asked Lamido to do the same, Lamido confidently replied, “You appointed me, and I did not ask you to appoint me. You think I will fall?” Obasanjo was impressed by Lamido’s response and exempted him from submitting the letter.

At the book launch, Lamido expressed his gratitude to Obasanjo, describing him as his boss, guide, leader, and inspiration. He thanked Obasanjo for writing the foreword of his book and for attending the launch, citing these gestures as evidence of Obasanjo’s love, trust, and confidence in him. Lamido’s book, ‘Be True to Yourself,’ offers a glimpse into his experiences, including his interactions with former military president General Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida in 1993, regarding the annulment of the June 12 election won by the late Moshood Kashimawo Abiola.

The event highlighted the strong bond between Obasanjo and Lamido, with both men sharing words of admiration and appreciation for each other. Obasanjo’s decision to appoint Lamido as foreign affairs minister in 1999 was motivated by Lamido’s impressive character and his connection to the initial candidate. The story showcases the intricacies of Nigerian politics and the personal relationships that shape the country’s leadership. As Obasanjo and Lamido continue to play important roles in Nigeria’s political landscape, their mutual respect and admiration for each other remain a significant aspect of their enduring relationship.
