Boko Haram Commander Issues Threats Against Nigeria’s Defence Chief and Citizens

A chilling message has been issued by a self-proclaimed Boko Haram commander, claiming to be the new leader of the group, known as “Shekau.” The terrorist has threatened Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Christopher Musa, as well as Muslim clerics, security personnel, and communities that support the government’s efforts to combat the insurgency.

The threats appear to be a response to an earlier warning from General Musa, who vowed that the terrorists would either surrender or face total annihilation by Nigerian troops. In a recently released video, the insurgent urged General Musa and the Nigerian Armed Forces to abandon their campaign against the group, claiming that they would not succeed in defeating Boko Haram.

The commander stated, “This message is for the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa. We call on you to repent and cease your actions, for you will not succeed against those of us fighting your government.” He also warned of dire consequences and regret for attempting to defeat the group, emphasizing that peace can only be achieved by abandoning democracy and embracing a new way of life.

The terrorist cited the perceived failures of former military leaders, saying that they did not succeed in defeating Boko Haram and that the same fate awaits General Musa and his men. He declared war against all Nigerian soldiers, regardless of their faith, stating that every soldier who wears the uniform to defend democracy is an enemy and will be fought with all their strength.

In an attempt to lure troops into defecting, the militant portrayed the military as a thankless job, urging soldiers to repent and leave their positions. He also issued warnings to Islamic clerics who publicly condemn Boko Haram’s extremist ideology, accusing them of misleading the public and threatening to crush them if they defame the group.

Communities and traders who support the armed forces were not spared in the threats, with the terrorist asserting that anyone aiding the military against them would be killed, labeling them as unbelievers for supporting democracy. The video has sparked renewed concerns over Boko Haram’s propaganda machinery and recruitment strategies, particularly as the Nigerian military intensifies its operations across the North-East and other troubled regions.

Security analysts believe the video is part of a psychological warfare campaign aimed at instilling fear, undermining morale, and challenging the resolve of both the security forces and the public in the ongoing war against terrorism. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen how the Nigerian government and military will respond to these threats and the escalating tensions in the region.
