The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has voiced concerns over talks of Peter Obi returning to the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). Party leaders are reportedly trying to persuade the former Anambra State governor to rejoin the PDP ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with the prospect of him becoming the party’s presidential candidate. Obi, who ran as the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2023 election, recently said he intends to serve only one term, believing four years is enough to implement change in Nigeria.

PDP figures, including Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed and Senate Minority Leader Senator Abba Moro, have confirmed that the party is indeed courting Obi. Wike, however, dismissed the idea, arguing that Obi’s return would be detrimental to the party. In a media chat, he questioned the logic of bringing Obi back, noting the ex‑governor’s past criticism of the PDP as “rotten.” Wike warned that allowing Obi to rejoin would undermine the party’s credibility and erode its ideological foundation, suggesting that such a move would be driven by ambition rather than principle and could destroy the party’s remaining ideology.

The debate emerges as the PDP prepares for the 2027 presidential election, with various factions exploring different strategies to regain power. Some members view Obi’s potential return as a strategic boost to the party’s chances, while others, like Wike, see it as a threat to the party’s integrity. As discussions continue, the PDP’s next steps and the outcome of these talks remain uncertain, leaving the party’s future direction unclear.
