The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, warned that the growing influence of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers State threatens his political standing. Speaking at his monthly media chat in Abuja, Wike said the APC’s recent wave of political appointments in the state has created a significant challenge for him as a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
Wike noted that the volume of appointments being made in Rivers State is unprecedented in its history, surpassing even those recorded during military and civilian regimes. He stressed that this development undermines his ability to maintain the trust and confidence of his constituents. According to the former Rivers State governor, the APC’s actions have raised the bar, compelling him to prove the value of his own leadership and vision for the state.
The minister emphasized that his political survival now hinges on the faith of the people, who may question his credentials in light of the APC’s empowerment efforts. He reiterated that the APC’s expanding presence in Rivers State constitutes a direct threat to his position, regardless of party affiliation.
Wike’s comments come amid heightened political tensions in the region, as the APC’s strategic moves are seen as an attempt to broaden its foothold and weaken PDP dominance. Analysts predict a fierce contest for power in the upcoming elections, with the APC and PDP locked in a battle for supremacy. The minister’s ability to navigate this complex landscape and retain public trust will be crucial for his future prospects.
