The 2025 US Open was marked by a heated exchange between Latvian tennis player Jelena Ostapenko and her American opponent Taylor Townsend during their second‑round match. Ostapenko criticized Townsend for not apologising after a net‑cord point, calling her “no education” and “no class.” The remarks sparked a strong reaction from the tennis community, with many defending Townsend.

Days later, Ostapenko issued an apology on Instagram, clarifying that her “no education” comment referred to tennis etiquette rather than Townsend’s personal character. She explained that she was frustrated by Townsend’s failure to acknowledge the net‑cord point, which she viewed as disrespectful and contrary to the sport’s rules. The apology came after backlash from fans and fellow players, including Serena Williams’ former coach Rennae Stubbs, who described the comment as “coded,” and journalist Caitlin Thompson, who expressed surprise at Ostapenko’s initial lack of contrition.

Despite the controversy, Townsend remained professional and chose not to engage with Ostapenko’s criticism. She continued her run in the tournament, defeating Antonia Ruzic in the opening round and Mirra Andreeva in the third round before falling to Barbora Krejcikova in the round of 16.

The incident has sparked a broader conversation about tennis etiquette and the importance of sportsmanship and respect on and off the court. Players and coaches alike have emphasized the need for professionalism, and the tennis world will be watching to see how this episode influences the remainder of the US Open and the sport as a whole.
