Midjourney accused of 'brazen theft' in Warner Bros. Discovery lawsuit

Warner Bros. Discovery has filed a lawsuit against Midjourney, alleging copyright infringement over the company’s use of artificial‑intelligence technology. The complaint, lodged in a California federal court, asserts that Midjourney’s commercial subscription service was developed using illegal copies of Warner Bros. Discovery’s copyrighted works, including characters such as Bugs Bunny, Superman and Wonder Woman.

According to the filing, Midjourney is “brazenly” dispensing Warner Bros. Discovery’s intellectual property, creating consumer confusion about what is lawful and what is not. The lawsuit contends that Midjourney’s actions constitute a blatant infringement of copyrighted works and that the company misleads its subscribers into believing its use of Warner Bros. Discovery’s content is authorized.

Warner Bros. Discovery is seeking $150,000 per infringed work, emphasizing the need to protect its content, partners and investments. A company spokesperson said that the development of stories and characters is at the heart of its business, and that Midjourney’s actions threaten this creative process.

This case is the latest in a series of legal challenges facing artificial‑intelligence firms. Earlier this month, Anthropic settled a copyright lawsuit for $15 billion, while Disney and Universal filed a complaint against Midjourney in June, accusing the company of being a “bottomless pit of plagiarism.” The lawsuit underscores growing concerns about AI’s impact on the film and television industry, as major studios seek to safeguard their intellectual‑property rights.

The use of AI technology has raised questions about copyright infringement and the potential for consumer confusion. As the industry continues to evolve, more lawsuits and legal challenges related to AI in creative fields are likely. Warner Bros. Discovery’s lawsuit against Midjourney is a significant development, and its outcome will be closely watched by industry experts and observers.
