Abdulmumin Jibrin, a Nigerian lawmaker representing the Kiru/Bebeji federal constituency in the House of Representatives, has accepted his expulsion from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in good faith. The NNPP leadership in Kano State accused him of anti‑party activities and of failing to meet his financial obligations to the party. The expulsion was announced by NNPP chairperson in Kano, Hashim Dungurawa, at a press conference on Saturday.
Jibrin expressed surprise at the sudden expulsion, noting that he was not given an opportunity for a fair hearing before the decision was made. He argued that this violated the principles of due process, fair hearing and justice. Despite being a member of the NNPP, Jibrin had been a vocal supporter of President Bola Tinubu. In a statement, he affirmed that his previous statements remain consistent with the core principles of the party and asked the NNPP to send him an invoice for his dues, which he claims he has never refused to pay.
The lawmaker announced that he will soon reveal his new party affiliation, with many speculating that he may join the All Progressives Congress (APC), the main opposition party in Kano State. His expulsion carries significant implications for the political landscape in Kano, where the NNPP has been a major player. The loss of a prominent lawmaker like Jibrin could diminish the party’s influence and underscores ongoing tensions within the NNPP, as some members are reportedly dissatisfied with the leadership.
Jibrin’s decision to accept the expulsion and move on is seen as a strategic move that allows him to maintain a positive relationship with his former party while exploring new political opportunities. He expressed gratitude to the NNPP for the support he received during his tenure and invited his supporters to join him on his new journey. As Nigeria’s political environment continues to evolve, Jibrin’s shift is likely to have notable repercussions for both the NNPP and the APC in Kano State.
