The Ogun State Government has announced the appointment of 1,200 political assistants to enhance civic engagement and deepen democratic participation across the state. This move fulfills Governor Abiodun’s commitment to broaden access to the dividends of democracy. According to a statement by Kayode Akinmade, the governor’s special adviser on media and strategy, the newly appointed assistants will serve as change agents, bridging the gap between grassroots communities and the state government.
Five assistants will be selected from each of the 236 wards in Ogun State, ensuring greater local participation in governance. Their key responsibilities include supporting the delivery of democratic dividends, articulating the needs of their respective wards, and communicating those needs to the state government. They are also expected to provide accurate feedback from the government to the wards and vice versa.
This initiative is part of Governor Abiodun’s electoral promise to involve every ward in his administration’s development programs and to run an all‑inclusive government that values people’s inputs in shaping policies and initiatives. The government has urged the new appointees to contribute significantly to the growth and development of their wards, local governments, and the state at large. By appointing these political assistants, the government aims to ensure that every ward has a voice in the decision‑making process, leading to more effective governance and improved service delivery.
The appointment represents a significant step toward enhancing democratic participation and civic engagement in Ogun State. As the state continues to develop, the role of these assistants will be crucial in keeping the government accountable and responsive to citizens’ needs. Through this initiative, the Ogun State Government demonstrates its commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusive governance.
