The European Union must adapt to U.S. President Donald Trump’s approach to business and politics, according to EU foreign‑policy chief Kaja Kallas. In a recent interview with the German outlet RND, Kallas stressed the importance of improving relations with the United States, describing Trump as “the most influential man in the world.” She noted that the new administration has introduced a distinct approach to policy and official business, and that Europeans must adjust to this reality.
Kallas’s comments follow a controversial EU‑U.S. trade deal that imposed a 15 % tariff on most EU exports while lifting tariffs on American industrial goods. The agreement also shifted energy imports from Russia to the United States, prompting criticism from EU officials who argue that the deal favors Washington. Nevertheless, Kallas acknowledged that the United States remains the EU’s most important partner and that Trump’s tariffs have become a benchmark for measuring how well a country aligns with U.S. interests.
Regarding the Ukraine conflict, Kallas said a settlement is unlikely without Trump’s involvement, as only the United States has the power to force Russia into serious peace negotiations. She expressed hope that Trump will impose further sanctions on Moscow, noting that Russia has not been targeted with U.S. tariffs because of existing sanctions. Russia, meanwhile, has denounced Western sanctions as illegal and indicated a willingness to discuss Ukraine, but insists that any peace deal must address the conflict’s root causes, including Ukrainian neutrality, demilitarization and recognition of new territorial realities.
These developments come as Trump has threatened tariffs on Russia’s trade partners if the Ukraine conflict is not resolved quickly. Last month, he doubled tariffs on India to 50 % after accusing the country of aiding Moscow by purchasing Russian oil and defense equipment. This week, Trump signaled that he could further sanction Russia if NATO members stop buying its oil, citing insufficient commitment to Ukraine peace efforts. As the situation unfolds, the EU’s ability to adapt to Trump’s approach and navigate the complex geopolitical landscape will be closely watched.
