The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has launched contempt proceedings against the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) for conducting by‑elections in 59 wards across the state. This action follows a September 16, 2025, ruling by Justice Mary Itsueli of the Edo State High Court, which restrained both EDSIEC and the state government from holding the elections. The court issued the injunction after the PDP filed an ex‑parte motion, arguing that the commission had failed to follow due process.
Despite the injunction, EDSIEC proceeded with the elections on September 20, 2025, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the sole party fielding candidates. The PDP condemned the move as a blatant disregard for the law and the judiciary. In a statement, Chris Osa Nehikhare, Publicity Secretary of the Edo State Caretaker Committee, stressed that the state’s electoral umpire and Attorney‑General must be held accountable for their actions.
The PDP has instructed its legal team to commence contempt proceedings against the Chairman and members of EDSIEC, as well as the Attorney‑General of Edo State, for willfully disobeying valid court orders. The party assured the people of Edo State that it will continue to defend democracy and the rule of law, vowing not to allow government officials to undermine the will of the people or ignore court orders with impunity.
The commission’s decision to proceed with the elections has raised concerns about the state of democracy in Edo State and the willingness of officials to respect the judiciary. The contempt proceedings represent a significant development, highlighting the importance of adhering to court orders and upholding the rule of law. The outcome will be closely watched, as it will affect the democratic process in Edo State and the judiciary’s ability to hold government officials accountable. The PDP’s actions underscore its commitment to defending democracy and ensuring that the will of the people is respected.
