Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has expressed his administration’s readiness to host a Super Eagles match at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan. The governor made this statement during the formal opening of the 81st Annual General Assembly of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) held in Ibadan on Saturday.

Makinde commended the NFF leadership for the progress made in promoting football development across the country, particularly at the grassroots and domestic league levels. He assured that his administration would provide the necessary infrastructure and support to host the Super Eagles, emphasizing the need to assess and improve the facilities at the Lekan Salami Stadium.

“We are ready in Oyo State to host the Super Eagles,” Makinde said. “Let us assess the facilities at the Lekan Salami Stadium and see what needs to be improved. I give you my word, we will invest the needed resources.”

The governor also advocated for a single-term tenure for sports administrators in Nigeria, which he believes would promote accountability, stability, and better performance in sports governance.

NFF President Ibrahim Gusau praised Makinde’s commitment to sports development and promised that a Super Eagles match would be staged in Oyo State before the end of the current administration in 2027. “We appreciate your contributions to football and sports,” Gusau stated. “I assure you that before 2027, a Nigerian national team match will be hosted here in recognition of your consistent support.”

The event was attended by key figures from the football world, including FIFA observers Hamed Haraz and Lyrique Dupiesis, as well as WAFU Executive Director Philippe Tchere and representative Nadim Magdy. Former NFF President Amaju Pinnick called on sports stakeholders to rally behind the vision of the current leaders and foster unity within the football federation.

The announcement highlights Oyo State’s efforts to develop its sports infrastructure and promote football development in Nigeria. With the NFF’s commitment to staging a Super Eagles match in the state, football enthusiasts can look forward to exciting matches in the future. The collaboration between the state government and the NFF is expected to boost sports development in the region and promote Nigerian football globally.
