2026 WCQ: Rohr names Remo Stars goalkeeper in squad for Super Eagles clash

The Benin Republic’s national football team, known as the Squirrels, has announced its 25‑man squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Rwanda and Nigeria. Head coach Gernot Rohr revealed the list at a press conference in Cotonou on Friday. Rohr, who previously coached Nigeria’s Super Eagles, included Remo Stars goalkeeper Serge Obassa, a standout performer in the Nigeria Premier Football League and the club’s first‑choice keeper since joining at the start of last season.

Other notable selections are goalkeepers Saturnin Allagbe, Olivier Verdon, Mohamed Tjani and Cedric Hountounji. Captain Steve Mounie will lead the side, supported by Junior Olaitan, Jodel Dossou and Tosin Ayegun, all expected to play crucial roles in the campaign.

The Squirrels will open the qualifying round against Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali on Friday, 6 October, before traveling to Uyo to face the Super Eagles at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium four days later. These matches are pivotal for Benin’s hopes of securing a place in the 2026 World Cup, and Rohr’s squad selection will be closely scrutinized.

Benin aims to build on past performances and make a strong impression in the qualifiers. With a blend of experienced veterans and promising young talent, the team boasts a balanced mix of skill and potential. The upcoming fixtures against Rwanda and Nigeria will test their strength and determination, and fans will be watching eagerly to see how the squad performs. Preparation and strategy will be essential to their success in the tournament.
