Nigeria: E1 powerboat championship makes African debut in Lagos

The E1 series, the world’s first all‑electric powerboat racing championship, made its African debut in Lagos, Nigeria, over the weekend. The event, the sixth stop of the 2025 season, featured teams competing in battery‑powered hydrofoil boats known as RaceBirds. Team Brazil emerged victorious, claiming its first win of the season.

Launched in 2024, the E1 series has quickly gained traction, with nine teams participating this season. Among them are entries backed by celebrities such as former Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal, US actor Will Smith, and former Ivorian footballer Didier Drogba. Drogba’s involvement was instrumental in bringing the race to Africa, according to E1 Series managing director John Williams.

The RaceBirds glide above the water to reduce drag and emissions, providing a thrilling spectacle for spectators. Local community members responded positively; attendee Oluwadamilola Osundhin noted that the event demonstrated Nigeria’s ability to host large‑scale gatherings. The Lagos government estimates the race could generate up to $100 million in tourism and hospitality revenue.

The championship’s presence is expanding, with races already held in cities such as Jeddah, Doha, and Monaco. Plans are underway to increase the number of teams from nine to twelve and to add more races to the calendar. Williams expressed hopes of hosting additional events in Lagos in the future, while the 2025 season is set to conclude in Miami in November.

The success of the Lagos race highlights the potential for electric powerboat racing to gain global popularity. As the sport continues to grow, it is likely to attract more participants, spectators, and investors. With its focus on sustainability and innovative technology, the E1 series is poised to make a lasting impact on the world of motorsports.
