FIFA U20 World Cup Flying Eagles qualify despite draw

The Nigerian U-20 national team, Flying Eagles, has secured a spot in the Round of 16 at the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup after finishing third in Group F with four points from three games. Their last group game against Colombia ended in a 1-1 draw on Monday morning.

The team, led by coach Aliyu Zubairu, had a challenging group stage but managed to earn a berth in the knockout stage as one of the best third-placed teams. They will face Argentina, another South American side, in the Round of 16 for a place in the quarter-finals. The match is scheduled to take place in Santiago on Wednesday.

Flying Eagles winger Sani Suleiman, who will miss the encounter against Argentina due to a second booking in the competition, expressed his confidence in his teammates’ ability to succeed without him. “I’m very happy that we qualified for the knockout stage,” he stated after the game against Colombia. “Determination and teamwork helped us to get the result against Colombia, and now we are through.”

Suleiman acknowledged the team’s struggles in the group stage but is optimistic about their chances in the knockout stage. “Hopefully, we will not struggle the way we struggled in the group stage,” he added. Despite not being part of the team against Argentina, he trusts his teammates to deliver a positive outcome.

The Flying Eagles’ qualification for the Round of 16 is a significant achievement for the seven-time African champions. Their upcoming match against Argentina will be a crucial test of their skills and determination. With Suleiman’s absence, the team will need to rely on their collective strength to overcome the challenge and advance to the quarter-finals. The Nigerian team’s performance in the tournament has so far been notable, and their next match will be closely watched by football fans worldwide.
