Canadian‑American singer Neil Young has announced that he will remove his music from Amazon, citing the company’s support for President Donald Trump and his administration. In a statement posted on his website, Young urged fans to “BUY LOCAL” and “BUY DIRECT,” calling for a boycott of large corporations such as Amazon and Whole Foods. He framed the decision as a response to Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos’s perceived backing of the Trump administration and encouraged people to support their local communities and businesses instead of relying on big corporations.
Young also referenced the recent U.S. government shutdown, accusing the administration of jeopardizing citizens’ income, safety, and health security. This is not his first public criticism of Trump. In April 2025, Young described Trump as “the worst president in the history of our great country” on his website, and he has previously criticized Trump’s feud with fellow singer Bruce Springsteen. He even released a protest song, “Big Crime,” which appears to target the president.
His pattern of using boycotts as protest is well established. In 2022, Young removed his music from Spotify to protest the platform’s hosting of Joe Rogan’s podcast, which he claimed spread misinformation about COVID‑19 vaccines. He later resumed streaming on Spotify after discovering that Apple Music and Amazon had also begun hosting Rogan’s podcast.
It remains unclear whether Young’s boycott of Amazon will extend to his physical products or be limited to his music on the platform. Nonetheless, the move underscores his long history of speaking out on social and political issues and represents a significant statement against what he perceives as corporate control and government overreach. As a prominent figure in the music industry, Young’s actions are likely to be closely watched and could inspire others to follow suit.
