The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) is celebrating its 20th anniversary, marking two decades of regulating the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI). Established on 31 October 2005 under the Electric Power Sector Reform Act (EPSRA) 2005—now superseded by the Electricity Act 2023—NERC has been instrumental in shaping the country’s electricity market. Over the past twenty years, the commission has championed reforms that promote transparency, accountability, consumer protection and sustainable growth across the sector.
To commemorate this milestone, NERC will host a series of events, including a technical session, a health and wellness session, and a commemorative dinner honoring pioneers, deceased staff members, past chairmen and former commissioners. These activities aim to showcase the commission’s achievements, engage stakeholders and set a forward‑looking agenda for the future of electricity in Nigeria. Government officials, industry representatives, development partners and consumer‑advocacy groups will convene to reflect on sector progress, share insights and renew their commitment to building a reliable, affordable and sustainable electricity supply industry.
NERC Vice Chairman Dr Musiliu Oseni emphasized the commission’s dedication to reforms that deliver tangible value to Nigerians. “This 20th anniversary is not just a milestone – it’s a reaffirmation of our mandate to protect consumers, promote investment and ensure a level playing field in Nigeria’s electricity sector,” he said. The celebration will also feature panel discussions with eminent power‑sector personalities, designed to foster collaboration, innovation and public engagement.
