The All Progressives Congress (APC) has condemned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for their reactions to the recent military threat issued by U.S. President Donald Trump against Nigeria. APC National Publicity Secretary Felix Morka described the opposition parties’ responses as “mindless and unpatriotic” during an interview on Arise Television’s Prime Time program. He also accused them of politicising the issue, calling their actions “irresponsible and despicable.”
Morka stressed that any U.S. decisions or statements concerning Nigeria must be based on accurate information, warning that false narratives could have far‑reaching consequences for the entire West African region. He noted that a military action against Nigeria could destabilise neighboring countries and argued that cooperation between the two nations is the best way to combat terrorism. Instead of resorting to threats, Morka suggested the United States should partner with Nigeria to provide support and assistance in the fight against terror.
The U.S.–Nigeria relationship, long characterised by cooperation on security and trade, has drawn renewed attention following Trump’s threat, prompting concerns among Nigerians and the international community and calls for calm and diplomacy. The APC’s criticism of the opposition parties comes amid a broader debate over the role of politics in addressing national security. While the ADC and PDP have been vocal in criticizing the government’s handling of the situation, the APC accuses them of prioritising political gain over national interest. As events unfold, the way the U.S. and Nigerian governments navigate this complex issue remains uncertain, underscoring the APC’s call for cooperation and accurate information as essential to a thoughtful, informed approach to the region’s challenges.
