2026 WCQ: Boost for Super Eagles as FIFA deducts 3 points from South Africa

Nigeria’s hopes of playing in the 2026 World Cup were crushed after the Super Eagles lost to the Democratic Republic of Congo in the CAF playoff final. The decisive match took place on Sunday night, with the Congolese side securing a place in the upcoming intercontinental playoffs.

The Super Eagles took an early lead in the first half when Frank Onyeka’s deflected shot found the net. The Leopards equalized when Mechak Elia capitalized on a defensive error, finishing past Stanley Nwabali. After 120 minutes the score remained 1‑1, forcing a penalty shootout to decide the winner. In the shootout, Nigeria faltered as Calvin Bassey, Moses Simon and Semi Ajayi all missed their kicks, while the Democratic Republic of Congo held their nerve and clinched the ticket to represent Africa in the intercontinental playoffs.

The intercontinental playoffs, scheduled for 23‑31 March 2026, will feature six teams competing for the final two World Cup spots. The Democratic Republic of Congo will join teams from other confederations—including Asia, North and Central America, and Oceania—in the quest for a place at the prestigious tournament.

Nigeria’s failure to qualify is a significant setback for the West African nation, which boasts a rich football history and a passionate fan base. The country has appeared at the World Cup several times, reaching the round of 16 in 1994 and 2014. The Super Eagles will now have to wait until the next qualifying cycle to try again for the global showpiece.

The intercontinental playoffs promise to be a thrilling affair, with teams from different regions vying for the remaining World Cup spots. As the football world looks ahead to the 2026 tournament, the Democratic Republic of Congo will aim to make the most of its opportunity and leave a lasting impression on the global stage.
