South‑West governors gathered behind closed doors on Monday in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State, to discuss pressing regional issues. The meeting, held at the Oyo State Secretariat in Agodi, was attended by the six governors of the South‑West: Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu of Lagos, who chairs the regional forum, Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun, Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun, Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti, and host Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo.
Although the specific reason for the emergency session was not disclosed, observers believe it is linked to the deteriorating security situation across the country, including recent kidnappings in Kebbi, Niger and Kwara states. The governors are expected to explore ways to enhance regional security, accelerate infrastructure development, and strengthen integration under the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN).
A key focus of the discussions will be the review of collaborative security initiatives, particularly the operations of the Amotekun Corps. Established as a regional security outfit to complement federal agencies, Amotekun’s capacity to address emerging challenges will be examined, with the aim of bolstering its effectiveness against threats such as banditry, kidnapping and terrorism that have affected the South‑West.
The meeting is seen as a proactive step toward tackling these security concerns while promoting regional development. Outcomes are anticipated to have significant implications for the South‑West’s safety, economy and the well‑being of its citizens, with further updates expected in the coming days.
