The Osun State caucus of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the House of Representatives has warned Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State to stay out of Osun affairs. The caution follows a disputed governorship primary held on Tuesday, which declared Adebayo Adedamola the PDP’s candidate for the 2026 election. In a statement signed by six caucus members, the lawmakers denounced the primary as “illegal,” alleging it was orchestrated by “thugs and political jobbers” brought in from Ibadan, Oyo State. They accused Governor Makinde of undermining Osun’s political stability through his actions.
The legislators emphasized that the PDP has established procedures for primaries, including the election of ward ad‑hoc delegates and national delegates. They argued that these procedures were not followed, rendering the primary invalid. Consequently, anyone claiming to be the PDP’s candidate based on the disputed primary would be committing “criminal impersonation” and provoking party members in Osun State.
The caucus also criticized Governor Makinde for exporting “impunity, recklessness, and sham” to Osun, despite the presence of a sitting governor who is known for involving all stakeholders in major decisions. The lawmakers pledged to uphold the 1999 Constitution and advised that any aspirant for the 2026 Osun governorship must adhere to the rules. They urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to disregard the disputed primary results and align its actions with the PDP’s constitution and guidelines.
The crisis in Osun reflects deeper internal leadership struggles within the PDP at the national level, where competing factions vie for control, leading to the suspension or counter‑suspension of key national officers and making legitimate primaries difficult for state chapters. The situation was further complicated by Governor Adeleke’s resignation from the PDP on November 4, 2025, citing the ongoing national leadership crisis. These developments underscore the need for the PDP to resolve its internal conflicts and establish a stable leadership structure to ensure free and fair primaries.
