Nigeria Niger unity remains strong says Shettima

Vice President Kashim Shettima has reaffirmed the strong bond between Nigeria and the Niger Republic, emphasizing that the two nations share a deep and abiding connection. Speaking during a courtesy visit to the Emir of Gumel, Shettima highlighted the historical and cultural ties that unite the two countries, stating that “Nigeria and Niger Republic are the same; they are related and share the same blood.”

Shettima made these remarks on the occasion of the official commissioning of the Juma’at Friday Mosque in Gumel, where he underscored the importance of unity and cooperation between the two nations. He cautioned against being swayed by propaganda that seeks to drive a wedge between Nigeria and Niger, emphasizing that the two countries are inextricably linked. The Vice President noted that he, along with other prominent Nigerians, has relatives in Niger, demonstrating the strong familial bonds between the two nations.

Shettima acknowledged that misunderstandings can arise in any relationship but emphasized the need for understanding and dialogue to resolve issues. He conveyed President Bola Tinubu’s message of affection and solidarity to the people of Niger, stating that “the bonds that bring both of us together are far stronger than the issues that seek to divide us.” The Vice President prayed for continued peace, unity, and stability between the two nations, which share a long and porous border.

Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State, where Gumel is located, commended Shettima for his visit, pledging to support the Federal Government’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. The visit underscores the importance of bilateral relations between Nigeria and Niger, which cooperate on various issues, including trade, security, and regional stability.

The Nigeria-Niger relationship is built on a foundation of historical, cultural, and geographical ties, with both countries sharing a common border and membership in regional organizations such as the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). As the Vice President noted, the bonds between the two nations are rooted in shared values and interests, which provide a strong foundation for cooperation and mutual understanding.
