Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has stressed the importance of veteran batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for India’s pursuit of success, especially with the 2027 ODI World Cup on the horizon. After India’s nine‑wicket win over South Africa in the third ODI, which clinched the series 2‑1, Kaif highlighted the duo’s pivotal contributions. Kohli’s unbeaten 65 off 45 balls—featuring six fours, three sixes and a strike rate of 144.44—stood out, and Kaif noted that his intent and form suggest he will remain a key player beyond 2027. Kaif also praised Rohit Sharma’s innings, a steady 75 off 73 balls with seven boundaries and three sixes.
Throughout the series, Kohli and Rohit were instrumental in India’s triumph. Kohli amassed 302 runs at an average of 151, while Rohit scored 146 runs at 48.66, including two half‑centuries. Kaif argued that pressuring Kohli to play domestic cricket is unnecessary, given his ability to perform at a high level even after a break. He believes Kohli should be free to manage his own game plan and preparation.
Looking ahead to the 2027 ODI World Cup, Kaif pointed out that Kohli will need to adapt to South African conditions, which differ from those in India. However, he reiterated that playing domestic 50‑over cricket at home is not a prerequisite for Kohli’s preparation. The emphasis on Kohli and Rohit underscores the value of experienced players in achieving victory in major tournaments like the ODI World Cup. India’s win over South Africa marks a significant milestone in their build‑up for 2027, and with Kohli and Rohit leading the charge, the team aims to carry this momentum into the upcoming tournament.
