The Labour Party’s Imo State chapter has elected a new executive committee to lead the party into the next general elections. The election of the new leadership followed the conclusion of the party’s ward and local government area congresses. Callistus Ihejiagwa was re-elected as the State Chairman through a consensus agreement.
National Vice Chairman of the party for the Southeast zone, Chidi Igala, represented the National Chairman at the congress and emphasized the importance of transparency in the party’s leadership. He noted that the party had learned from its experiences in the 2023 election and was now more careful in selecting its leaders. Igala hinted that the party had faced internal crises after the election but had since resolved them, and was determined to prevent similar scenarios in the future.
The new leadership is expected to steer the party’s affairs in the state ahead of the next electoral exercise. Igala advised the new executives to carry all party members along in their decision-making processes to ensure effective participation. The newly elected Chairman, Ihejiagwa, pledged to adhere to the party’s authority and work towards providing credible leadership in the state and Nigeria at large.
Ihejiagwa stated that the Labour Party is a mass movement aimed at saving the nation from bad leadership. He expressed his commitment to taking the party to the next level by ensuring it democratically takes over leadership at the state and national levels. The chairman criticized the ruling All Progressives Congress, saying it had failed the people, and that the Labour Party was willing to offer an alternative government.
The election of the new executive committee was witnessed by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission and party members from the 27 local government areas of the state. The exercise took place at the party’s office in Owerri. With the new leadership in place, the Labour Party is poised to strengthen its presence in Imo State and potentially make significant gains in the next general elections. The party’s focus on transparency, inclusivity, and credible leadership may resonate with voters seeking change. As Nigeria prepares for its next electoral cycle, the Labour Party’s efforts to reposition itself as a viable alternative to the ruling party will be closely watched.
