Senate approves Tinubu’s request to deploy Nigerian troops to Benin Republic — Daily Nigerian

The Nigerian Senate has approved the deployment of troops to the Benin Republic after President Bola Tinubu’s request. Senate President Godswill Akpabio read the president’s letter, which described the situation in Benin as an “attempted unconstitutional seizure of power” and noted that the Beninese government had asked for Nigeria’s immediate air support to quell the emerging crisis. The letter argued that the intervention aligns with Nigeria’s regional responsibilities and its long‑standing ties with Benin.

President Tinubu explained that he consulted the National Defence Council before making the request, emphasizing that it conforms to the collective security principles of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The request was submitted under Section 5(5), Part 2 of the 1999 Constitution, which requires parliamentary consent for external military deployments.

The Senate gave its consent after the matter was considered by the Committee of the Whole on Tuesday. Senator Akpabio praised the president for seeking Senate approval and thanked his colleagues for granting consent with minimal debate. He also warned that the crisis in Benin could affect Nigeria’s security, particularly border security, and said the president’s actions were a necessary response.

The deployment of Nigerian troops to the Benin Republic is viewed as a significant development for regional security and stability, demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to democratic principles and support for neighboring countries in crisis. With legislative backing now secured, the next steps in the deployment process are expected to be announced shortly. The situation in Benin continues to be closely monitored, and the international community is watching developments with keen interest.
