Rivers APC Defends Strategy Amid Calls for Wike to Join

Mansur Musa, a member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives for the Aliero/Gwandu/Jega Federal Constituency in Kebbi State, has left the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and joined the All Progressives Congress (APC). He announced his defection during a plenary session on Tuesday, and his letter of notification was read aloud by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas.

In his letter, Musa blamed the PDP’s “deep‑seated internal fractures, persistent conflicts, and unresolved crises” for eroding the party’s unity and ability to function effectively. He argued that these divisions created an environment incompatible with his constituents’ expectations and hindered his capacity to represent them adequately.

Musa said his decision came after extensive consultations with community leaders, political stakeholders, and constituents. He maintained that staying in the PDP would compromise his ability to serve his people, prompting him to seek a more stable and coherent political structure. He believes the APC can provide the stability required for meaningful governance and aligns with the aspirations of his electorate.

The APC members in the House formally welcomed Musa, and he has asked the House to update its records to reflect his new affiliation. His defection underscores the ongoing realignments in Nigeria’s political landscape as politicians reposition themselves ahead of future elections. It is the latest in a series of high‑profile switches between the country’s major parties, reflecting the PDP’s internal struggles and declining national influence, while the APC continues to consolidate its position as the ruling party. The implications of Musa’s move will be closely watched as Nigeria approaches its upcoming elections.
