A member of Nigeria’s House of Representatives, Mansur Musa, has defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing persistent internal conflicts within the opposition party. Musa, who represents the Aliero/Gwandu/Jega Federal Constituency in Kebbi State, announced his defection on Tuesday during a plenary session.
According to his letter of notification, read by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, Musa attributed his decision to the PDP’s “deep-seated internal fractures, persistent conflicts, and unresolved crises,” which have eroded the party’s unity and capacity to function effectively. He noted that these divisions have created an environment incompatible with the expectations of his constituents, hindering his ability to provide effective representation.
Musa stated that his decision followed extensive consultations with community leaders, political stakeholders, and constituents. He emphasized that remaining in the PDP would compromise his ability to serve his people effectively, prompting him to seek a more stable and coherent political structure. The APC, he believes, offers the stability required for meaningful governance, aligning with the aspirations of his people.
The lawmaker’s defection was formally acknowledged by APC members in the House of Representatives, who welcomed him into the party. Musa has urged the House to update its records to reflect his new political affiliation. This development highlights the ongoing realignments within Nigeria’s political landscape, as politicians navigate party affiliations ahead of future elections.
Musa’s defection is the latest in a series of high-profile switches between Nigeria’s major political parties. The PDP has faced internal conflicts and power struggles, leading to defections and a decline in its national influence. In contrast, the APC has sought to consolidate its position as the ruling party, attracting defectors from opposition parties. As Nigeria’s political environment continues to evolve, the implications of Musa’s defection will be closely watched, particularly in the context of the country’s upcoming elections.
