Amotekun Corps Criticised Over Alleged Misconduct Leadership Failure

Insecurity: Group demands Amotekun overhaul, cites leadership failure

A civil society group, The Osun Masterminds, has expressed concerns over the operations of the Osun State Security Network Agency, Amotekun Corps, citing instances of misconduct and leadership shortcomings. In a statement delivered by its Executive Director, Prof Wasiu Oyedokun-Alli, during the group’s December 2025 State of the State address in Osogbo, The Osun Masterminds highlighted the corps’ failure to meet public expectations due to reported cases of murder, extortion, and high-handedness by some operatives.

The group specifically referenced the killing of residents in the Akinlalu community in September, describing the incident as unfortunate and troubling. Prof Oyedokun-Alli noted that the current leadership of the corps, headed by retired Assistant Superintendent of Police Omoyele, had fallen short of acceptable standards. In comparison, the group observed that Amotekun corps in neighboring states, including Ondo, Oyo, Ogun, Ekiti, and Lagos, had achieved notable successes.

The Osun Masterminds recalled the successful tenure of former leaders, Comrade Shittu Amitolu and Brigadier General Adewinnmbi, and called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to urgently reorganize the Amotekun Corps to ensure public safety. The group emphasized the need for a total overhaul of the corps’ headship, citing concerns over the potential spread of terrorism and banditry into the state from neighboring areas.

While acknowledging a reduction in security challenges during the recent Yuletide season, The Osun Masterminds commended the Federal Government’s efforts and cautioned against potential threats to Nigeria’s territorial integrity. The group urged the government to remain vigilant in matters of national security, emphasizing the importance of addressing the shortcomings in the Osun State Security Network Agency to prevent further insecurity.

The concerns raised by The Osun Masterminds underscore the need for effective leadership and accountability within the Amotekun Corps to maintain public trust and ensure the safety of citizens. As the group continues to advocate for reforms, the Osun State government is expected to take prompt action to address the alleged misconduct and leadership failures, ultimately strengthening the state’s security framework.
