Kapalua’s Plantation Course in Hawaii has shown significant improvement after overcoming the drought conditions that affected the region a few months ago. Recent photographs reveal a venue that looks good, and the latest images were shared by Patrick McDonald of CBS. The course, which hosts the annual PGA Tour event The Sentry, had its 2023 tournament canceled because of the ongoing drought and a water dispute.
PGA Tour pro Michael Kim reacted to the photos, expressing disappointment that the event was canceled. Kim’s only start at The Sentry came in 2019, when he tied for 32nd at four‑over after four rounds. The Plantation Course reopened to the public on November 10, after being closed for more than two months due to strict water restrictions in Maui. General manager Alex Nakajima thanked the agronomy team for their efforts in restoring the course to its current condition.
The reopening is significant for the local community, as more than 300 employees rely on the course and its restaurants for their livelihoods. West Maui had suffered a severe drought, prompting Tier 4 water restrictions that were later eased to Tier 3, allowing 40 % of normal water use. The Plantation Course is a unique par‑73 layout that has hosted The Sentry since 1999, featuring a challenging hole‑by‑hole yardage that totals 7,596 yards.
The cancellation of The Sentry was a major blow to the golfing community, and the recent images of the course have sparked disappointment among fans and players. However, the improvement in the course’s condition raises hopes for future events, and the community looks forward to the return of golfing activities to the area. With the course now reopened, golfers can once again enjoy its challenging layout and scenic views.
