Trump threatens Mexico cartel strikes

US President Donald Trump has suggested that he may authorize military strikes against drug cartels operating in Mexico. This comes after a US operation led to the detention of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro, who the US government accuses of involvement in drug trafficking, a claim Maduro denies. Trump has long criticized Mexico, alleging that it has allowed large quantities of drugs and undocumented immigrants, some of whom he describes as violent criminals, to enter the US.

Since September 2025, the US has reportedly targeted at least 35 boats allegedly linked to cartels in the Caribbean. In a recent interview with Fox News, Trump stated that while significant progress has been made in reducing drug imports by sea, the focus will now shift to targeting cartels on land. He expressed sadness over the influence of cartels in Mexico, describing the situation as “very, very sad to watch.”

In response, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum downplayed Trump’s comments, characterizing them as part of his typical communication style. She announced that she has instructed her Foreign Minister, Juan Ramon de la Fuente, to discuss the matter with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and if necessary, with Trump himself, to enhance cooperation between the two nations.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry had previously condemned the US military action in Venezuela, labeling it a “serious threat to regional stability.” Tensions also arose between Trump and Colombian President Gustavo Petro following the incident, with the two leaders later engaging in a phone call to ease tensions, describing the conversation as cordial.

The situation highlights ongoing concerns about drug trafficking and regional stability, with the US seeking to curb the flow of drugs into the country. Mexico and other regional partners are navigating these issues while maintaining diplomatic relationships with the US. As the US considers its next steps in combating drug cartels, the potential for further military action and its implications for regional relations remain significant.
