Acting IGP Disu Arrives for Swearing-In at State House

The Nigeria Police Force is set for a change in leadership following the arrival of Acting Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Wednesday. Disu is scheduled to be sworn in after meeting with President Bola Tinubu, marking a pivotal transition at the helm of the nation’s police force.

This change follows the resignation of former Inspector-General Kayode Egbetokun, which President Tinubu accepted on Tuesday. Presidential Spokesperson Bayo Onanuga stated that Egbetokun stepped down citing pressing family considerations. Disu’s appointment initiates a new chapter for the police command, which has been under scrutiny as part of broader security sector reforms.

Prior to his appointment, Disu served as an Assistant Inspector-General heading the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos. His extensive career includes key command roles such as Commissioner of Police in Rivers State and the Federal Capital Territory. He has also led specialized units, including the Police Intelligence Response Team and the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos.

Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force in 1992 as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police after training at the Police Academy in Wudil, Kano State. His academic background includes a Bachelor of Arts in English Education from Lagos State University, along with two Master’s degrees—one in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University and another in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University.

The leadership change comes amid ongoing efforts to reform the police force and enhance public confidence. Disu’s experience in criminal investigation and intelligence units positions him to address persistent security challenges. His immediate focus will likely include implementing the administration’s security agenda and improving operational effectiveness across all commands.

The swift transition underscores the federal government’s emphasis on stabilising the leadership of critical security institutions. Disu’s formal swearing-in will activate his authority to oversee the Nigeria Police Force’s strategic direction during a period of heightened national security concerns.
