Nigeria Urges Restraint as US-Israel-Iran Conflict Escalates

The Nigerian government has called for immediate de-escalation in the escalating conflict between the United States, Israel, and Iran, warning that further hostilities could have severe repercussions for regional and global stability.

In a statement released Saturday night, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs expressed “deep concern” over the violence that erupted following missile attacks by the US and Israel on Iran. Nigeria urged all warring parties to refrain from actions that might intensify the fighting, emphasizing the potentially “grave consequences” for international peace.

The statement advocated for a return to dialogue and strict adherence to international law. “We urge strict adherence to the provisions of the United Nations Charter and the Geneva Convention, particularly taking into cognisance the respect for sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the peaceful settlement of disputes,” it read.

The current phase of conflict began early Saturday with US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Iran has since launched retaliatory missile attacks against Israel and US positions in the Middle East. According to Iran’s Red Crescent Society, at least 201 people have been killed in the initial US and Israeli strikes on Iran.
